Brit Bunkley and Andrea Gardner
Andrea Gardner is a US-born photographer and sculptor. She is interested in romantic notions of the ‘picturesque’ and how this relates to environmental concerns. Her work is held in numerous public collections throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
Brit Bunkley works in sculpture and 3D modelling, video, and image editing programs. While focusing on existential anxieties and apocalyptic fears, his work introduces elements of whimsy and irony. He is also represented in public collections, and has been the recipient of many awards and fellowships, including a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship (1980–81), a C.A.P.S. N.Y. State artist’s fellowship grant (1983) and the Rome Prize Fellowship (1985–86). He won the Sculpture Wanganui 2011 Award, and was awarded third prize in Now&After’12, Moscow Museum of Modern Art (2012).
Andrea and Brit arrived in Aotearoa together in 1995 and are linked by their exploration of the animal kingdom and its relationship to humans and the landscape. They have created numerous collaborative outdoor works, including two previous works in Sculpture in the Gardens and two in Sculpture on the Gulf.

Andrea Gardner and Brit Bunkley, Cenotaph for a Snail, 2024, wood, PVC flex vinyl and PLA/polyester resin
Andrea and Brit’s entry this year consists of a monumental realistic sculpture of a native land snail sitting on top of a plinth, which is covered with a black-and-white photograph of a typical rural New Zealand landscape that has been deforested and grazed. The monument draws attention to the small, quiet and endangered land snail and its loss of habitat, as well as to future aspirations for rewilding our historical carbon sink of native forest.
