Glen Colechin

Once juggling an engineering career and art-making, Hawkes Bay’s Glen Colechin had a sea-change spurred on by the impacts of the COVID pandemic in 2020. Happy with this change, he is now flat-stick as a full-time artist and has a great mentor to guide him through any challenges – well-known Clevedon artist James Wright.

Glen’s engineering background comes in handy and he often makes small marquettes of his proposed works to fine-tune angles and curves.

Glen is inspired by nature and his contemporary sculptures are made from recycled materials, off-cuts from native timbers, recycled copper, and natural elements like stone and wood, found on hikes along the coast in the Hawkes Bay, where he calls Napier his home. “I see shapes in materials and think how it will form part of a subject I want to create,” Glen describes. “Some things can take a year to manifest, but they all slot into place eventually.”

Glen creates indoor and outdoor sculpture sold internationally and throughout New Zealand.
